SHELTON - Melvin E. Real, 86, of Shelton died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at his home. It was Melvin's wish to be cremated. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. The Rev. James Janovec will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Shelton Cemetery. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is caring for the family. Melvin was born July 27, 1926, in Ansley to Ivory and Harriett (McCollough) Real. He was raised and attended school in Ansley. He entered the U.S. Army from Fort Leavenworth, Kan., on Nov. 13, 1944, and served during World War II with the 19th Replacement and Depot Co. He was united in marriage to Lois Hirsch on April 10, 1951, in Wood River. The couple made their home in Shelton for the past 61 years, where he was self-employed as a mechanic owning and operating Real's 66. Survivors include his wife, Lois Hirsch Real; daughters Sharon Gutierrez of Columbus and Beverly Shuken of Santa Barbara, Calif.; one brother, Carl Real of Seattle; two sisters, Esther Newman of Lincoln and Zella Newman of Cheyenne, Wyo.; five grandchildren, Kristen and Ryan Shuken of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Andrew, Jake, and Jaisa Gutierrez of Columbus. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and seven brothers. Published in The Grand Island Independent on October 8, 2012
