Emigrated to the United States with his wife and children on the Koln , which arrived in Baltimore, Maryland from Bremerhaven, Germany on May 20, 1881. The ship manifest includes the following two families from Austria, destination Nebraska: Josef Roubal (age 47), Barb. (45), Josef (14), Joh (9), Maria (7), Martin (4), and Wenzel Kunesch (58), Barb. (56), Wenzel (17), Antonia (2). 1885 census (Skull Creek Township, Butler County, Nebr.): Jos Rowland (51, farmer, born Bohemia), Barbara (wife, 48, keeps house, Bohemia), Wenceslas (son, 18, tailor, Bohemia), Joseph (son, 16, Bohemia), John (son, 14, Bohemia), Maria (daughter, 11, Bohemia), and Martin (son, 9, Bohemia). 1900 census (same location): Joseph Roubal (born June 1833, farmer, Bohemia, immigrated 1881), Barbara (wife, Nov 1836, Bohemia, immigrated 1881, married 40 years, mother of eight children, five living), and Martin (son, Apr 1876, farm labor, Bohemia, immigrated 1881).
