Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), July 27, 1933, p. 1, col. 7 DIED AT HIS HOME IN ABIE. Anton Spatz, Sr., Long-Time Resident of County, Passed On. Abie, July 26 - Anton Spatz, Sr., respected resident of Butler county in Abie and vicinity for many years, passed away at his home in Abie Saturday, July 22, at the age of nearly 85 years. He had been in failing health for a couple of months and had been bedfast for two weeks prior to his death. Funeral services were held at Sts. Peter's and Paul's church in Abie at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning, Rev. Father Kasny officiating. Six grandsons of Mr. Spatz, Raymond Shorney, Edwin and William Spatz and Leonard, Edward and Ernest Vavrina, acted as pallbearers. Burial was in the Abie cemetery. There was large attendance at the funeral, including many relatives and friends from Omaha and other places. Mr. Spatz was born in Semegic, Germany, on August 1, 1848. He came to America in 1867, and was married at Omaha in August, 1871, to Anna Voboril, who survives him. He and his family resided on a farm near Abie for some time and his home had been in Abie the past 25 years. Besides his widow, he leaves eight children, five daughters and three sons. They are Mrs. W. F. Cook of David City, Mrs. Josephine Coufal, Mrs. Agnes Vavrina, Mrs. James Shorney, Mrs. L. R. Vavrina and J. L. Spatz of Abie, Ed Spatz of Bruno and Anton Spatz, Jr., of Brainard. One daughter, Mrs. Joseph Hamsa, died at Linwood in September, 1932. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Barbara Winkler of Emmett, and one brother, Frank Spatz, of Norfolk. Mr. Spatz had made many friends during his lifetime and was highly respected for his fine qualities of character.
