Born John Peter Birkel but known as James in the United States. Son of Peter and Mary (Mackel) Birkel. Married Julia Hilger on April 2, 1894 at David City, Nebr. by Rev. Father H. Bex. His marriage record refers to him as John not James. '''''''''''' The People's Banner (David City, Nebr.), May 27, 1948, p. 10, col. 5 FUNERAL OF JAMES P. BIRKEL Funeral services for James P. Birkel, residing one mile south of Surprise, who died Friday evening, May 14, about 9:30 o'clock after being bedfast just two days, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City. Rev. Father Downey of Ulysses conducted the services. The pallbearers were six nephews, Alfred, Clarence, Gerald, John and Peter Birkel and Henry Smith, all of David City. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery near David City. James P. Birkel was born in Luxembourg Oct. 23, 1868, and came to America with his parents at the age of 2½ years. He was married to Julia Hilger on April 2, 1894. Eight children were born to them, of whom seven are living: Edward and Charles residing at home. Joseph J. at Shelby, H. Lawrence at Ulysses, Louis at Fremont, George and one daughter Emily Alshouse at Bellwood. He also is survived by nine grandchildren; two brothers, Frank and Henry Birkel of David City; and one sister, Mrs. John Puetz of of Albion. __ CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the community of Surprise and Ulysses for the many kind courtesies extended to us at the time of the passing of our father.
