People's Banner (David City, Nebr.), August 29, 1912, p. 1, col. 3 DEATH OF PETER BIRKEL. Peter Birkel was born in Germany in 1834. He died Friday, August 23, 1912 at the ripe old age of 78 years. He was married in Germany at the age of 28, and with his family came to America 41 years ago. He first settled in Iowa where he lived for two years, then came to Nebraska where he settled on a homestead in the Platte Valley nearly straight north of David City. To Mr. and Mrs. Birkel were born twelve children, nine boys and three girls, eleven of whom are still living. One child, a boy, died in the old country in youth. All of the children reside in Butler county except two sons one of whom lives in Iowa and one in Nance county, this state. Mrs. Birkel passed away in 1905, and since that time Mr. Birkel has been making his home among his children but most of the time with his son, Mike just west of town at whose home he died. He had not been in good health for some time and his death was not unexpected by his friends. Peter Birkel was one of the best known characters in Butler county, always pleasant and with a good word for all, he was a great favorite among his acquaintances in social life and as a business man his word was as good as a bond, which made him many friends among men. Peter Birkel was the father of as fine and honorable a family of boys and girls as every lived which shows that his life had not been lived in vain. He was proud of them and they in turn were proud to own him as father. He was a consistent member of the Catholic church from which funeral services were held and interment made in the Catholic cemetery on the Valley were his wife was buried. Peter Birkel leaves behind him a life that will not soon be forgotten and one of which the large family of children are justly proud.
