Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), June 7, 1905, p. 4, col. 2 Mrs. Mary Birkel Dead. Died on Wednesday, May 31st, 1905, Mrs. Mary Birkel, aged 61 years. Deceased was born in Luxemburg. They moved to Cascade, Iowa, where they remained two years, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Peter Birkel. In 1871 the family moved to Butler county. Eleven children were born of their union: Nick, John P., John, Mike, Jake, Henry, Frank, Lena, Mary and Lizzie. All are married except Henry, Frank and Lizzie. Mrs. Birkel has been a true helpmate, and a loving, faithful mother, and has assisted her husband until he is one of the richest men in the county – who owns ten quarter section farms in Butler county, and one in South Dakota. The remains of Mrs. Birkel were laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery in the Luxemburg settlement, Friday.
