Born in the village of Doubravice, town of Litomysle, county of Chrudim, Bohemia, Austrian Empire (now in the Czech Republic). Emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1868. Married Mary Pavel on April 14, 1885 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. Farmed in Linwood Township, Butler County, Nebr. where he is listed on the 1880, 1885, and 1900 census records. _____________________ Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), September 9, 1909, p. 1, col. 4 Linwood Items Josef Barcal, residing on a farm four miles southwest of here for the last twenty-four years, [died] last Sunday afternoon....Five years ago he was operated on and it seems that he never regained his health, and has been complaining ever since with pains in his head, etc. He told the writer about three weeks ago that he was in bad shape and did not know how many more times he would be able to come to Linwood. He leaves a wife and six children; the oldest is Joseph, Jr., who is married and resides on a farm near here, Mary, Frank, Tony, James, and Emil are single, the youngest only ten years old. We express our sympathy to the wife and children. NOTE: See his obituary for complete details regarding his death.
