Born in the village of Doubravice, town of Litomysle, county of Chrudim, Bohemia, Austrian Empire (now in the Czech Republic). Emigrated to the United States in 1868. The passenger list for the ship Ariel , which arrived in New York City from Bremen, Germany on September 23, 1868, includes the following family from Bohemia: Franz Barcal, 55; Anna, 39; Catharina, 9; Frans, 8; Josef, 7; Maria, 4; and Francisca, 3. Lived in Iowa before settling in Linwood Township, Butler County, Nebr. 1880 census (Linwood Precinct, Butler County, Nebr.): Frank Bartsul (age 65, born Bohemia), Annie (wife, 60, Bohemia), Frank (21, Bohemia), Joe (19, Bohemia), Mary (17, Bohemia), and Frances (15, Bohemia). 1885 census (same location): Joseph Barcal (24, Bohemia, farmer), Mary (wife, 20, Bohemia), and Frank (father, 70, Bohemia, widower, farming). 1900 (same location): Frank Barcal (born Oct 1814, Bohemia, widower, immigrated 1870), enumerated with son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Mary and their family.
