Funeral services for Matej (Mike) Styskal were held in Bruno on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the home to St. Anthony's church, the Rev F.J. Kopecky saying the requiem Mass and conducting the burial rites . Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery at Appleton. The pall bearers were his three sons, Louis, Frank, and Rudolph, two sons-in-law, James Chladek and Louis Vanous and cousin, Joseph Styskal. Mr. Styskal, who had been a sufferer with cancer for the past eighteen months, passed away at his home at 5:40 o'clock on the afternoon of July 14, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 20 days. His wife preceded him in death on April 3 of this year. Matej Styskal was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia on February 24, 1859, the son of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Styskal. He was fourteen years old when his parents migrated to the United States and to Butler County, Nebraska. In 1881, he married Mary Fredlick, and they lived on a farm in the Appleton community until March 26, 1926, when they retired and moved to Bruno. They were the parents of 14 children, four of whom died in infancy. Two sons, Leo died seven years ago and Matt, five years ago. The surviving sons are Louis, Omaha; and Frank and Rudolph, David City. The daughters are Mrs. Charles (Mary) Kobza, Dwight; Mrs. L.J. (Antonia) Knakal and Mrs. James (Anna) Chladek, Bruno; Mrs. Louis (Mollie) Vanous and Mrs. Frank (Evelyn) Emerson, David City. 34 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren survive, as also, two brothers, John and Anton Styskal of David City. Mr. and Mrs. Styskal reared their grandson Edward, son of Leo Styskal, from the time of the death of his mother when he was one-year-old to the present time. Mr. Styskal was another of the hearty pioneers and farmers who helped to build up the county through all the struggle, hardships and depressions, as well as successes of the early years. His industry cheerful outlook and a ready with made him many friends. He was a helpful neighbor, a kind husband and father. Among those in attendance at the funeral were Louis Styskal, and family, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Styskal, Grant; Mrs. O.C. Weissen and family, Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Styskal, Bee; Mr. and Mrs. Kobza, Seward; John Styskal and Anton Styskal, David City. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved. Notes: His birthdate on obituary is listed as February 24, 1859, but his birth record says January 14, 1859.
