The Brainard Clipper (Brainard, Nebr.), May 24, 1923, p. 5, col. 3 & 5 James M. Shalon, a farmer whose home was 10 miles south of David City, 5½ miles southeast of Garrison, was struck by lightning about 9:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, May 11, while discing one of his friends, and instantly killed. Chares Holba, a neighbor, passing the filed soon afterward, noticed the team standing idle and saw Mr. Shalon prostrate, and hurried to the scene. Funeral services for Mr. Shalon were held in St. Mary's Catholic church at Dwight, Monday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. They were conducted by Rev. Father Pazourek. The pallbearers were Charles Holba, Joseph Halas, John Kobza, fred Kedlacek, Joseph Novak and James Pelan. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery at Dwight. There was large attendance at the funeral. Two brothers of Mr. Shalon reside in Butler county, John Shalon near Brainard and Joseph Shalon near Garrison, and four sisters of the deceased reside in Seward county, near Bee, Mrs. Joseph Politsky, Mrs. Anton Politsky, Mrs. Frank Plisek and Mrs. Joseph Busek. Mr. Shalon was 51 years of age. He was born in Butler county April 13, 1872. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shalon, were early settlers in Butler county. He was married to Mary Simonek September 3, 1901, at Plasi. Surviving Mr. Shalon are Mrs. Shalon and two children, Ignac, 18 years of age, and Olga, aged 11 years. Mr. Shalon was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church of Dwight.
