Born Zebadie "Betty" Hamsa, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Voboril) Hamsa. Married Joseph Matulka on August 27, 1907 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. ''''''''''' People's Banner (David City, Nebr.), August 19, 1926, p. 1, col. 5 [under SURPRISE column] Mrs. Joe Matulka died at her home four miles southwest of Surprise last Wednesday evening. She had been suffering for some time with that dreaded disease cancer. The funeral was held in David City Friday morning and burial was in the David City cemetery. Mrs. Matulka was one of those good women of a happy jovial disposition and it was a pleasure to be in her presence. She leaves her husband two sons and two daughters to miss the presence of wife and mother. Those loved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends. ''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), August 19, 1926, p. 1, col. 5 FUNERAL SERVICES ON FRIDAY For Mrs. Joe Matulka, Who Died at Home Near Surprise August 11. Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Matulka, who died at her home, two miles south and two miles west of Surprise, were held in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, at 10 o'clock Friday morning, Aug. 13. Rev. Father Loughran, of the Ulysses Catholic church, of which Mrs. Matulka was a member, conducted the services. The pallbearers were Joseph Jakl, Hugh Kelly, Arthur Lux, Frank Lux, Albert Ratkovec and Ed Shonka. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery, David City. Coming from elsewhere to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jiracek of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. James Svoboda and two children from Weston, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamsa and three children from Bee and Mr and Mrs. Frank Semin and three children from Utica. Mrs. Hamsa's [ sic ] death was from cancer of the lungs. She was in her 42d year. Her maiden name was Bessie Hamsa and she was born May 20, 1885, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hamsa, at Abie. She was married to Joe Matulka at Abie in August, 1907. Surviving Mrs. Matulka are her husband and four children, Joseph, John, Mildred, Alice and Alfred. She also leaves five sisters, Mrs. L. C. Reinhardt, Mrs. Tony Cemper and Mrs. John Styskal of David City, Mrs. Joseph Seriky of Linwood and Mrs. Emma Svoboda of Weston; two brothers, Joe Hamsa of Linwood and Frank Hamsa of Seward; and one half-brother, Jerry Fendrich, of Abie.
