Orval Milton Harding told his children that when he was 9 years old he walked behind a covered wagon from Kansas to Texas, but he lived most of his life in Barber County, Kansas. He married Mary Ellen Smith on August 5, 1923 in Kingman, Kansas. Together they had eight children who survived to adulthood and one child who died a few days after he was born (Orval Milton, Jr.). Orval did farm work, bartending and primarily old field work during his life. He was a loving and fun-loving father and husband. He loved to play the harmonica and would often play music with a friend who played banjo while his daughter Betty played guitar.
