Bio
Mary Ellen Smith Harding was the daughter of Grace Emily Byers and Alvia Adolph Smith. She was the first of seven children. She married Orval Milton Harding on August 5, 1923 in Kingman, Kansas. She and Orval lived at Isabel, Walton and Medicine Lodge, Kansas during their life together. She contracted tuberculosis from her mother when she was a young mother and spent time in a sanatorium in Norton, Kansas, recuperating. Her mother and sister Pearl died from TB. According to the family, Pearl was 4 or 5 months pregnant with her first child when she died. Mary Ellen relapsed with TB a second time and spent several more months in Norton recuperating. Her children remember her as a sweet person and loving mother who never said a bad word about anyone. Mary Ellen died three months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She had time to see all her family and had a peaceful passing.
