Houdek, Sr., 86, of Dwight Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, at Assumption Catholic Church, Dwight, for Charles James Houdek, Sr., 86, who died July 8 at the home of his daughter after a lingering illness. Father Anthony Trausch officiated. Pallbearers were Jake Hotovy, Joe Petrzilka, Jr., Louis Hurt, Jr., Raymond Houdek, Johnnie Houdek, Jr., and Arnold Houdek, all grandsons. Burial was in Assumption Cemetery, Dwight. The son of James and Mary Kuha Houdek, he was born Sept. 22, 1878, in Czechoslovakia. At the age of nine he came to this country and attended school in Omaha. He was united in marriage to Mary Raiter at Omaha on July 3. Seven children were born to this union. He worked for some time for an Omaha paper then moved to Swanton and later to Valparaiso. Most of his life was spent on the farm. For many years he was school director and road supervisor for Butler county. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Kresse. He was a member of Dwight Assumption Catholic Church. Surviving are three sons, John of Colon, Charles of Central City, and James of Valparaiso; three daughters, Mary Haney of Omaha, Mrs. John (Emma) Kresse of Brainard, and Mrs. Louis (Agnes) Hurt of Valparaiso; one sister, Mrs. John Vlach of Valparaiso; 28 grandchildren, and 78 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Joe.
