Bio

The Brainard Clipper (Brainard, Nebr.), August 22, 1929, p. 5, col. 4 Fatal Auto Accident Sunday Evening Joseph Hamsa, twenty-four, died at the Lincoln General hospital, early Monday morning, as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident the evening previous. The accident occurred on state Highway No. 16 in front of the filling station by Weston shortly after 8 o'clock. Joe, in company with his brother, Frank, and wife and Tony Marek of Gresham were returning from Omaha, and when nearing the filling station a truck drove into the road directly in front of their car which was traveling at a fair rate of speed. In the crash which followed, Joe suffered a severely crushed chest, a broken arm and a bad gash across the forehead. Marek and Mrs. Hamsa received bad cuts and external bruises, while Frank was thrown thru the top and clear of the wreck escaping serious injury. The three injured persons were given first aid and then rushed to the Lincon hospital, where Joseph, failing to rally from internal injuries, passed away shortly after 1 a.m. Mrs. Hamsa and Marek were given medical attention and were able to return to their homes Monday morning. Joseph J. Hamsa was born at Dwight, Nebr., on March 11, 1905, the third son of Frank and Antonia Hamsa. His childhood days were spent in that city and in Brainard where his parents moved while Joseph was yet a small boy. In 1918 the family moved to Gresham where they resided until spring of 1927 when Mr. Hamsa sold out and moved to Dwight. Joe farmed with his brother Jaes, that year near Octavia and last year on a place northeast of Brainard. For the past year he had been working in Brainard. He is survived by his father Frank Hamsa Sr. of Dwight; three brothers; James, of Gurley, Nebr.; Frank, of Shelby, and Jacob residing with his father and one sister, Mrs. J. A. Novacek of Dwight, also by his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Hromas of Brainard. Funeral services were held at Dwight Catholic church Wednesday morning at 9:30, conducted by the pastor Rev. F. J. Kopecky and burial was in the Dwight cemetery by the side of his mother who died five years ago. ___ We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the many friends who gave us condolence in our time of sorrow and also to those who gave floral and spiritual offerings.
