Vernita Doris Penner, the daughter of Peter P. and Anna (Trautman) Miller, was born near Stockham, Nebraska on February 26, 1920 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on May 3, 2004, at the age of 84. She grew up on a farm south of Stockham, where she attended country school through the 8th grade. Vernita was united in marriage to Jake Penner on February 24, 1940 at Grand Island. They spent their first married years on a farm south of Hampton. In 1948, they moved to a farm north of Hampton and in 1962, they moved to a farm south of Hampton. In 1963, they moved into Hampton. Jake passed away on April 11, 1990. Vernita was a member of the Hampton United Lutheran Church, United Lutheran Church Women and the church ladies quilting group. She dearly loved and enjoyed her grandchildren, and especially baking and cooking for her family. Vernita was an avid fan and supporter of Hampton Hawk sports! She also enjoyed watching major league baseball. Sewing and crocheting were also things that kept Vernita busy. Her parents, husband and a brother, Victor W. Miller, preceded her in death. Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Ronald D. (Sharon) Penner of Hampton and Edward L. (Darlene) Penner of Marquette; two daughters, Joan (Don) Hubbard of Wagner, South Dakota and Judy (LaVelle) Hitzemann of Hampton; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
