Anna Slegel, daughter of Karel and Barbara Kocum Slegel, was born in Irving, WI, July 23, 1880. She came to Iowa with her parents, in a covered wagon, at the age of 2 months. She attended the rural schools in the Vail area. On October 7, 1896, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Hawley. After the ceremony, they departed by train for Michigan and Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. On their return they settled on a farm northwest of Vail. Four children were born to this union. Mr. Hawley died January 15, 1931, after an extended illness. Anna continued to make her home on the farm and remained active in its operation until illness forced her to move to the Denison Manor at Denison, Iowa, in 1973. She had been a member of the Royal Neighbors in the Vail area for 75 years. Anna was a local midwife for the area, assisting in the births of several of the children born in the neighborhood. Tragedy struck the family around 1912, when their house burned to the ground early one morning. It was not long, however, before a large modern house was rebuilt on the farm, which served as her home until 1973. Anna was a life-long member of the Vail Presbyterian Church, and was active in the Ladies Aid Society for many years. Although she suffered from arthritis in later years, she refused to let the affliction deter her from pursuing a very active life, with nary a complaint. She passed away at the Denison Care Center on July 20, 1975, at the age of 94 years 11 months and 27 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 22, at the Huebner Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold McConnell officiating. Interment was in the family plot at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa.
