Contributed by Thorsley - MRS. K. SLEGEL OF VAIL, DEAD —————————— After Many Months of Illness, Well Known Lady of Vail Passes Away on Wednesday. —————————— MOTHER OF SEVEN CHILDREN —————————— Lived in Crawford County Since 1880, Coming Here From Wisconsin — Born in Bohemia —————————— Vail. Jan. 19 — (Special to the Review) — On last Wednesday occurred the death of Mrs. Karel Slegel at her home in the northwest part of town, after a lingering illness from heart trouble and complications. Although she had been ill for many months and her death was expected, it came as a shock to her many friends and relatives. All the surviving children were present at the bedside when the dear old mother breathed her last. In her death a kind, patient and loving wife and mother who had done her part in life passed to the great beyond. Mrs. Slegel, nee Barbara Kocum was born in the village of Sobetice, county of Pilsen, Bohemia, April 5, 1845. She came to Jackson county, Wisconsin, in 1869 and on May 24, 1871, she was united in marriage to Karel Slegel. They resided in Wisconsin until the fall of 1880, when they moved to Crawford county and bought a farm a few miles north of Vail, where they lived until they accumulated enough of the world’s goods to take life easier, and in 1911 they sold the farm and purchased a fine residence in Vail, where she lived until the time of her death. Seven children were born to this union. The eldest were twins, Paul and Peter, who died when but a few months old. She left to mourn her departure a husband and five children: Frank, Mrs. Wilbur Hawley and Mrs. Wm. Maynard, of Vail, and Lewis and Mrs. F.H. Chapman, of Hyas, Canada. One sister, Mrs. Henry Zeman, of Melrose, Wis., also survives her. Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of Crawford county and highly esteemed by scores of friends who extend the deepest sympathy to those bereaved in this hour of sorrow. The funeral was held Friday at 10 a.m., services being conducted at the house by Rev. R.E. Jones, Presbyterian pastor, who paid a beautiful tribute to her memory and also spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing relatives. The remains were laid to rest in the Vail cemetery. The bearers of the pall were P.F. Lynch, C.H. Rasmussen, E.T. McAndrews, Albert Kral, G.B. McAndrews and J.H. Kral.
