Contributed by Thorsley - KAREL SLEGEL DEAD —————————— Well Known Man Passes Away Sunday Following Two Weeks Illness —————————— Sunday afternoon at a little after one Karel Slegel passed quietly away in a peaceful sleep. Death came as a relief after two weeks of severe suffering. He had for many years been patient sufferer from diabetis, but those who know him never heard him complain. He was at all times a cheerful contented companion. The deceased was born November 26, 1847, in Klatovy, Bohemia, where he grew to boyhood and learned the art of cabinet making. He followed this occupation until he reached the age of 20, when he immigrated to this country and located in Jackson county, Wisconsin, in 1867. For three years he worked as a laborer on a farm during the summer and spent those three winters and the following six in the pineries of northern Wisconsin. In the summers he spent his time clearing a small tract of land which he had purchased. Here he built a small cabin for his home. He was united in marriage to Barbara Kocum May 24, 1871. They lived in this home, which he had built, until the fall of 1880 when he, with wife, two little boys and baby two months old started for Iowa in a covered wagon. They traveled thus for seventeen days and finally located on a farm a few miles north of Vail, where they lived for six years. Longing to see his people in Wisconsin, he again in 1886 decided to drive across country in a covered wagon. Reaching Wisconsin after thirteen days he bought a farm and cleared some of it of heavy timber, but after spending six years in good old Iowa, he stayed there only two years and returned once more to Iowa, this time shipping by freight. He bought and located on a farm a few miles northeast of Vail. In 1898 he sold this farm and bought a larger one two and a half miles northeast of Vail, on which he resided until 1911, when he and his wife retired and moved to Vail. Here they lived until death called Mrs. Slegel away, since then Mr. Slegel’s devoted son Frank and wife have made their home with him. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Slegel. The eldest were twins Paul and Peter who died in infancy. Five are left to mourn him: Frank, Mrs. Anna Hawley, Mrs. William Maynard, Mrs. Floyd Chapman, all of Vail, Lewis of Hyas Canada. A sister and brother of Blackriver Falls, Wisconsin, also survive him. The funeral was held at 10:00 o’clock this (Wednesday) morning at the home. Services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Stauffer of Deloit, Iowa, with interment in the Vail cemetery. The pall bearers were J.F. Kral, James Brogan, John Hickey, Joseph Obst, Frank Aylward and John Stehlik.
