Mayme Slegel Maynard, daughter of Karel Slegel and Barbara Kocum Slegel, was born January 9, 1884, and grew to womanhood in Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa. On September 5, 1906, she was married to William R. Maynard of Jackson Township, where they subsequently made their home. Her death came suddenly and unexpectedly on November 9, 1931, the result of a paralytic stroke she suffered earlier that same day. Surviving her were her husband and eight of their ten children. Twin daughters died shortly after birth in 1911. She was a wonderful wife and mother, her first thoughts always being for her family. She was possessed of a most pleasing personality and was held in the highest esteem by all who were fortunate enough to make her acquaintance. She belonged to the G. L. F. W. Club and the auxilliary of the Farmers Union. She was a very active member and was always present at the meetings unless sickness kept her at home. A few years prior to her death, she took the correspondence work in Jackson Township, for the Denison Bulletin and was a faithful co-worker on the staff. Mayme and William celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on September 3, just two months prior to her death. Among those in attendance at her funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huber, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Huber, Wm. Huber Jr., Miss Mayme Kunes and Miss Vernie Huber, all of Melrose, Wisconsin.
