Bio

Marvin Schumann was born near Harrold, TX on September 12, 1924 to Charlie & Mary Schumann. He was the seventh of ten children in the family. He died on June 23, 2012 in Wichita Falls, TX. after a long and courageous battle against cancer and lung disorder. On March 13, 1944, He married Jewell Dea Skelton in Frederick, OK. Thus began a marriage that would last more than 68 years, until his death. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the European conflict. He was an advance scout in the 8th Infantry Division until wounded in the fighting at Brest, France. Upon recovery, he then served as a heavy machine gunner until the end of the war. He survived the horrific battle of the Hurtgen Forest and several other frontline engagements as his unit moved into Rhineland and shortly before Germany surrendered. Upon discharge, he received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, and American Theater Campaign Medals. He also received the EAME Campaign Medal w/3 Bronze Stars. A carpenter by trade, he retired from the Vernon State Hospital in 1987 after 23 years of service. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Vernon. he assisted in the planning and building of the congregation's new facility when it was built several years ago. Not seeking acclaim, he did many things for many people. He and his wife, along with other members of their church, went on a missionary trip to Piedras Negras, Mexico. There he built kitchen cabinets for a local orphanage. He assisted in building the cabinetry for the Red River Valley Museum when it was constructed. Over his lifetime, he assisted in the remodeling of several local small churches. He loved playing dominoes,"42", and checkers. He dearly loved his family and they loved him in return. His warm smile and kind demeanor will be missed by all who knew or met him. Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters Alma Gregory and Edna Ryan, brothers Alvin, John, Gus, Charles, Dan, and Walter. A granddaughter, Amber Lee Leatherman Ray, also preceded him in death. Surviving family members are his loving wife; daughter Brenda Sue Leatherman and husband Steve of Ledbetter, TX; son Danny Paul and wife Carol of Bridgeport, TX; granddaughters DeAnna Gillespie and husband Robert of Bastrop, TX; Missy Jervis and husband John of Ledbetter, TX; Brandy Montgomery and husband Brian of Pearland, TX; Michele Juarez and husband John (JJ) of Denton, TX. Granddaughters are Lauran Dobos, Lynzee Gillespie, Maddyson Jervis, and Bentley Montgomery. Great Grandsons are Austyn Gillespie, Caedon Jervis, Hunter Jervis, Brody Montgomery, and Jonah Juarez. Also surviving is his brother Edd Schumann and wife Tillie of Vernon, along with numerous nephews and nieces. Services will be at the Second Baptist Church in Vernon on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 10:00 AM with interment at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Glendal Raschke, Jon Jervis, Robert Gillespie, John (JJ) Juarez, Frank Froelich, and Bob Beazley. Visitation with the family will be at Sullivan Funeral Home Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
