CHARLES MIX COUNTY NEWS, GEDDES, SOUTH DAKOTA JOSEPH CARDA HANGS HIMSELF ON APRIL 18, 1921 The sad intelligence came to Geddes, Monday morning of the death of Joseph Carda of Moore Township. He passed away by hanging himself between the hours of 3 and 5 o'clock, Monday. When his wife woke up in the morning and missed him, she thought he had gone to the barn to do chores. Later it was found that he had gone there and got onto a barrel and tied a rope around his neck and then kicked the barrel out from under him where he was later found by his son who had gone to the barn to do chores. His homelife was pleasant but he worried much over financial conditions and they so weighed on his mind that he suddenly became deranged and while in this condition he took his own life. He was born in Bohemia in 1865 and came to this country in 1875 and later took up a homestead on the reservation in Charles Mix County where he has since resided. He was the owner of 480 acres of land which was well improved. He leaves to mourn his death, five sons and seven daughters besides, his faithful wife. The funeral services were held Wednesday. A minister from Platte, SD officiating as Rev. Deller was out of town at the time. It is always most sad when a life goes out this way, so suddenly and unexpectedly, which brings added burden to relatives and friends. The mind of this husband and father was not right when this act was committed and so a loving Father who knows well our thoughts will be a loving Father still. The news join with the many in extending sympathy, hope, and comfort. --From Carda Heritage, by Elmer James Carda, 1987.
