His Tennessee delayed birth certificate, WWI draft registration card & social security death index all list his year of birth as 1893. His headstone shows date of death as 5 Dec 1974 but Tennessee death records show date of death as 2 Dec 1974, newspaper obituary shows the same date. Elmwood burial records show a burial date or 4 Dec 1974. Memphis Press-Scimitar, Memphis, Tennessee, Tuesday, December 3, 1974 Eugene A. Smith, 80, of Bolivar, Tenn., a former Memphian and former bookkeeper for Pidgeon-Thomas Iron Co., in Bolivar at 11 last night after a long illness. He was a member of First Methodist Church. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Edna S. Pope of Memphis. Services at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Memphis Funeral Home on Union; burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
