Served during WWII with the Marine Corps. He carried the flag that was flown at Iwo Jima; each man in his unit carried it for one day. He was wounded at Iwo Jima. Roy Lee married Fleta Jeraldine Campbell and together they had 2 children Micheal and Margaret. Roy Lee was known as "Son" to his family. He taught school in Medicene Mound, Texas as a young man. Obituary: RETIRED PRINCIPAL DIES IN OJAI AT 77 Retired Meiners Oaks Elementary School teacher and principal roy L. Vantine, 77, Ojai, died Friday at home after a short illness. Mr. Vantine was born June 12, 1912 in Quanah, Texas and was a 43-year county resident coming from Texas. He was an educator for 30 years, retiring in 1977 and was at Meiners Oaks Elementary School for 19 years. He served a term as president of the Ventura County Elementary Administrators Association. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, participating in campaigns to capture Bouganville, Guam and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his action Iwo Jima. He was an Elder in the Ojai Church of Christ. He was a member of the Senior Men's Golf Club, Double Duffers Club, Retired Professional and Business Men's Club and the Ventura County Retired Teachers Association. He is survived by wife Fleta "Jerry"; son Mike of Kirkland, Wash.; daughter Margo Glanville of Wilburton, Oklahoma; brother Jack of Rogers, Arkansas; sister Floy Ketchersid of McCamey, Texas, and 4 grandchildren. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., today and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Clausen Funeral Home, Ojai. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Vance Carruth and Clinton Storm officiating. Burial will be in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
