They moved to Henry County, illinois in 1854 where they engaged in farming. In 1879, the family moved by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. In 1883, they moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 acres east of Concord. Jacob traded 80 acres owned in Henry County, Illinois to the Burlington Railroad for this 160 acres in Dixon County, Nebraska. The family lived in the covered wagon while the ground was broken up for planting. A barn was built for the oxen and other livestock. Later a lean-to shelter was built; then the next summer a house was constructed. The lumber was hauled from Wakefield for the house and barn. After his wife's death, Jacob made his home with Harry B. and family, who was farming the homestead. (Information from great grandson, Gene E.
