Bio

Charles S. Karnes, age 95, a resident of Weiser since 1951, died Saturday at 4 p.m. Mr. Karnes was born in Springfield, Ill., May 20, 1860, and homesteaded near Dallas, S. D. in 1909. He retired from farming in 1934 and came to Weiser in 1951 from South Dakota. Survivors include his wife, Nellie: four sons, Ivan Patrick, Pete (Jerry), and Marvin of Weiser, and Donald of Tangler, North Africa; three daughters, Mrs. Florence Sorensen of Concord, Calif. and Mrs. Ethel Hoffnion of North Hollywood, and Mrs. Mrs. Bonnie Anderson of Bonesteel, S. D.: 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Northam-Jones chapel. Charles was the son of Jacob and Lucy (Whitman) Karnes; brother of Thomas H., Harry B., Ella M. and Kitty M. The family moved from Henry County, Illinois in 1879, traveling by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. In 1883, the family moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, homesteading near Concord.
