STAR CITY-- Ernest D. McGriff, 100, of Star City, died February 19, 1998, at Gardner Nursing Home. He was born June 22, 1897, in LincoIn County, a son of the late Benjamin McGriff and Evalinea Norton McGriff. He was a retired farmer and worked for Mississippi River Fuel Company at Glendale. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Church of Christ at Star City. He served in the Army during World War I. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alcy Taylor McGriff, who died January 18, 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Ernestine Austin of Star City and Marceline Simmons of Pine Bluff; two sisters, Laura Case of Star City and Mattie Moore of Monroe; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Service of Star City with John Kellum and Don McClain officiating. Burial will be in Leek Cemetery at Star City. He was not given a middle name at birth but when he signed up to serve in WWI, he was assigned the middle name Daniel which became his legal name.
