John Michael was born July 28, 1845, in Germany, to George M. Horn (May 4, 1813 - Jan 30, 1901) and Anna Buchwalt (Feb 11, 1808-January 1848. He had no siblings; he was three years old when his mother, 29 years old, died. In 1867, at the age of 22, he immigrated to the United States where he lived, for a while in or near Chicago, IL and later settled in Nebraska. There he met Johanna Shultz (Solz); they married September 5, 1878. He was 30 years old, she was 16. It is said that he spoke only German all his life. Twelve children were born to Michael and Johanna including: John and Mary who died of typhoid fever before they reached adulthood, Pete, Pauline, Emily, Antoinette, Andrew, Anna (died only a few months old from measles), Joe, Rose, Frank and Jennie. In 1894 John Michael and Johanna along with their five living children moved to Oklahoma where they took over land near Ceres, Oklahoma which had been homesteaded by a previous land rusher. Until his death, John Michael farmed to provide for the family. John Michael died in January 1901 suffering from pneumonia. His wife and children continued to farm.
