Harold M. Benner of LAKE ANDES, SD - Funeral services were held in memory of Harold M. Benner, 74, of Lake Andes, SD on Monday, June 19, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Andes, SD. He died June 15, 2000, at Wagner Community Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1925, he was the son of the late Mahlon and Mary (Comp) Benner of Port Royal. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen (Kisely) Benner, whom he married on Aug. 4, 1947. Also surviving are: a son, Dan Benner, Owings Mills, MD; four sisters, Dolores Singer, Port Royal, Linda Zimmerman, Mechanicsburg, Carleen Weiand, Lewistown and Nancy Shirk, Burnham; three brothers, Alton Benner, Bloomsburg, Robert Benner, Port Royal and David Benner, Camp Hill; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Benner, and a sister, Connie Baylor. He attended Port Royal public schools and then worked at various jobs in Pennsylvania, including Miller's Texaco in Harrisburg before moving to South Dakota. He worked at Melmer's Standard Service from 1946-1952 and also served as volunteer firefighter in Lake Andes, SD. He worked on the construction of the Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown until 1955, when he began working for Western Construction Co. on the Oahe Dam in Pierre. He then owned and operated Harold's Texaco Service Station in Pierre. In 1966, he went to work at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere, IL, where he excelled for 25 years in skilled trades until his retirement in 1990. In 1991, he moved back to Lake Andes, SD, where he enjoyed hunting, working in his shop and visiting with friends and relatives. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lake Andes, SD.
