Albany Democrat-Herald 30 Dec 2009. Oct. 26, 1929 — Dec. 21, 2009 John Norman Mann, 80, of Corvallis died Dec. 21 at his home. He was born in Grand Island, Neb., to Norton and Nina Mann. He was the youngest of 14 children. John came to Albany at the age of 16. He joined the Marine Corps in April 1952 and fought in Korea. He was discharged in June 1954. He married Shirley "Pony" Mann on Feb. 3, 1961, in Stevenson, Wash. John had several jobs in Albany working in the logging business and for mills. He was working on the building of the Detroit Dam when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. John went to work for Northwest Natural Gas Company in April 1956, where he remained until his retirement in November 1991. At that time he moved to La Pine, where he and his wife, Pony, had a small business. They returned to the Willamette Valley in 2008. John enjoyed horses and wood working. He was a member of the American Legion and the Marine Corps League. He was a former member of the Linn County Posse. John is survived by his wife, Pony; children Sandra Nelson of Albany, Mike, Kelly and Perry Mann of La Pine, Yvette Smith of Texas, Becky Sapp of Billings, Mont., and Tammy Adair of Philomath; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister Margaret McDonald of Albany. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Norman and John D. A memorial service will be at a later date. Twin Oaks Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
