CANON CITY DAILY RECORD - CANON CITY, FREMONT COUNTY, COLORADO - JANUARY 4, 1940 FORMER HEAD OF COAL CREEK MINE DIES WEDNESDAY Benjamin Beach, former superintendent at the Old Coal Creek mine of the Colorado Fuel and Iron company and one of the pioneer livery barn operators in Florence, died at his home in Florence shortly before midnight Wednesday from pneumonia and complications. He had been confined to his bed for 19 days. Mr. Beach was 82 years of age, having been born in Ruspridge, Eng., on April 29, 1857. He had resided in Fremont county since 1884. Shortly after coming to the county, he operated the old Pioneer Livery Stable in Florence for about five years, later moved to Coal Creek to become foreman of the C. F. & I. mine there. He worked up until he became superintendent. He was with the company for 35 years, was regarded as one of its outstanding mine executives in this region. He was married on June 7, 1876 to Miss Mary Jones. She died several years ago. Mr. Beach is survived by five children, Mrs. Miriam Tyson, Allen Beach, Mrs. Kathryn B. Hensen, Miss Eunice Evans, all of Florence, and Sidney Beach of Pueblo; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was a great lover of sports of all kinds, actively backed baseball teams in this county in years past and was a great fisherman. A close friend, William T. Reese, with whom he made many fishing trips, died only Monday of this week in Florence. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Beach have not been completed. His body is in care of the Holt Funeral home of Florence.
