An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum, Thursday, March 25, 1971: Funeral services for Mrs. Austin Spence, 77, of Gatesville were held at 10 a. m. Friday in Scott's Funeral Home chapel. Rev. G. L. Derrick conducted the rites, and burial was in the City Cemetery. Mrs. Spence died Wednesday, March 17, in a local nursing home. She had been in failing health for some time. She was born Clara May Gilchrest in Gonzales County July 5, 1893, and came to Coryell County with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gilchrest, at an early age. She married Austin Spence, a blacksmith, on Dec. 18, 1920. They moved to Gatesville in 1924. Mrs. Spence was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband; three sons, Grady Spence of Gatesville, Harold Spence of Waco and Reb Trueitt Spence of Coleman; three brothers, Cleburn Gilchrist of Waco, William Merdia Gilchrest of Waco and Louie Gilchrest of Adamsville; one sister, Mrs. Lettie B. Crawford of Kermit; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers for Mrs. Spence's funeral were Winfred Cummings, Jim Miller, Harold Cohagan, Willis Key, T. C. Grisham and W. L. Perkins.
