An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Thursday, March 21, 1974: Cleburne C. Gilchrest of Waco, a former Gatesville resident, died Saturday in a Waco nursing home after a long illness. He was 68. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday at Scott's Funeral Home chapel and were conducted by Rev. H. O. Bildenback and Rev. M. V. Hemphill. Burial was in Restland Cemetery. Mr. Gilchrest was born April 6, 1905, in Oglesby. He married Miss Elva Whisenhunt on March 30, 1929, and they lived in Gatesville until 1964, when they moved to Waco. Mr. Gilchrest had been a patient in a nursing home the last three years. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dale Gilchrest and Norman Gilchrest, both of Waco; three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Mary) Higginbotham of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Doyle (Betty) Holt of Waco and Mrs. Chester (Barbara) Bray of Gatesville; two brothers, Merdia Gilchrest and Louie Gilchrest, both of Waco; a sister, Mrs. Lettie B. Crawford of Kermit; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers for Mr. Gilchrest's funeral were Don Gilchrest, Pete Gilchrest, Jack Bankhead, Rebel Henson, Herman Sims and James Box.
