An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Thursday, June 22, 1972: Austin Spence, 71, longtime Gatesville blacksmith, died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday in the local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) in Scott's Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. G. L. Derrick officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery. Mr. Spence was born in Coryell County on Sept. 21, 1900. He was reared in the Mound and Pecan Grove communities and lived in Coryell County all his life except for three years in Rogers and Rising Star. He had resided in Gatesville since 1923, operating a black-smith shop on south Sixth Street. As a hobby, Mr. Spence raised rabbits for a number of years and helped stage rabbit shows here. He married Miss Clara May Gilchrest on Dec. 18, 1920. She died in 1971. Mr. Spence was a Baptist. He is survived by three sons Grady Spence of Gatesville, H. M. (Red) Spence of Waco and Reb Trueitt Spence of Coleman; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Owen of Houston and Mrs. Lottie Lynch of Clifton; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
