OBITUARY: Sioux City Journal, Sioux City, Iowa, January 24, 1974 Mrs. Harry A. Washburn, 96, 6120 Morningside Ave. died Wednesday at a Sioux City nursing home after a short illness. Mrs. Washburn, the former Ellen Sandburg was born Dec. 5, 1877, at Cheyenne, Wyo. and moved to Elk Point, S.D., as a small girl. She was graduated from the University of South Dakota and was married to Mr. Washburn in August, 1895. He died in 1952, in Sioux City. Mrs. Washburn was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Isis Chapter 173, OES, and the White Shrine and was a former member of the Girls of '68 and the Sunshine League, and was a past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include a son, Arthur J. of Sioux City; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Lemke of Sioux City; 12 grand-children; 25 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. The body was taken to the W. Harry Christy Morningside Funeral Home. Notes for Ellen Sandberg: She suffered from senility in her later days. Ellen moved to Elk Point, SD when small. Ellen graduated from Vermillion,Univ. of SD. Occupation: Taught at Univ. of SD. Twin of Anton, although Evelyn (daughter) says Ellen didn't have a sister-just 2 brothers.
