John Ondrak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ondrak, was born in Fillmore County, July 24, 1870, and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Lincoln, August 12, 1943, having attained the age of 70 years and 19 days. Having grown to manhood in Fillmore County, Mr. Ondrak served his country in the Spanish-American War as a member of Company H, First Nebraska Volunteers. He participated in the capture of Manilla and in the Philippine insurrection, which followed. He was honorably discharged at the Presidlo, San Francisco, August 23, 1899. He returned to Nebraska and on March 1, 1900, was married to Christina Uldrich of Milligan, who survives him. To this union were born seven children, three of whom preceded him in death. The others are Henry of Lincoln, John and Mrs. Ella Chapman of Lincoln and Corporal Bennie of Camp Murphy, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Ondrak lived on a farm near Fairmont many years before retiring and moving to Exeter. Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. William Fries of Ravenna, Mrs. Adolph Steyskal of Ohiowa and Mrs. Julia Yeck of Burchard; and three grandsons, Archie Capman, Darryl and Verlin Ondrak. Mr. Ondrak was energetic and active as long as his health permitted. His cheerful disposition won him many friends in this community where he spent his entire life except for the time in military service. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, at the Farmer Funeral home here and at Milligan. Rev. Klein conducted the service here. Mrs. Mabel Manning sang, accompanied by Mrs. Armin Bender at the piano. Rev. K. O. Zavadil of the Wilber Methodist Church conducted the services at Milligan. Burial was in the Milligan Cemetery was with military honors by members of the American Legion posts of Exeter and Milligan. The Fillmore County News (Exeter) August 19th, 1943 page 1.
