Bio

Honoratus F. "Onie" Wessel, 83, of Humphrey, passed away, Friday, July 15, 2011, at Countryside Home in Madison. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey with Fr. John Andrews, Fr. Scott Hastings and Deacon's Dennis Anderson and Greg Carl officiating. Interment will be in the St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service, and 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday , all at the church. Honoratus F. "Onie" Wessel was born Sept. 15, 1927, to Jacob J. Wessel and Amelia Zwiener in St. Bernard (rural Lindsay). He attended St. Bernard Grade School and graduated from Humphrey St. Francis High School. He married Eileen Ann Fuchs on July 26, 1958 in Humphrey at the St. Francis Catholic Church. He farmed with his wife east of Humphrey and in 1992 retired and moved to town. Honoratus was a member of the US Army from Oct. 17, 1950 to Oct.8, 1952 at the rank of Sgt. with Co. C, 172nd Infantry Regiment, 43rd Infantry Division for 11 months in Germany. He had served on governing boards of Platte County ASCS Office and Humphrey Township. He was a member of Humphrey American Legion and VFW Posts and Catholic Order of Forester's. He was a member of St. Francis Parish, the Holy Name Society and had served on the St. Francis School Board. He played baseball on several community teams, enjoyed playing cards and had a great love for his grandchildren. Onie was a good and faithful servant of the Lord at all times - from farming the ground, to loving his family - especially his wife of nearly 53 years - to making all people he saw smile. He will be missed by all. Honoratus is survived by his wife, Eileen of Madison; daughter, Janet (Al) Pfeifer of Madison; sons, Steven (Renee) Wessel of Lincoln and Richard (Brenda) Wessel of Omaha; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; sister, Eunice Olmer of Humphrey; sister's-in-law, Lovina Wessel of Moline, Il, Dorothy Wessel of Madison, Arlene Wessel of Lindsay and Betty Wessel of Columbus. Honoratus was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Urban, Myron, Frederick, Louise, Fred "Larry", Melvin "Jim"; sisters, Carolyn Classen, Adeline Rezac, Gertrude Jakub, Agatha DeCapp and Marie Wessel. Memorials to donor or family choice. Arrangements by Duesman Funeral Chapel in Humphrey.
