Son of Jacob J. Wessel and Amelia Zwiener. He attended St. Bernard Catholic School. He married Arlene M. Beller Feb. 22, 1954, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in St. Bernard. He was a lifetime St. Bernard and Lindsay community resident. He was employed by Humphrey Radio and St. Bernard Telephone Co. He mostly farmed with his wife on the Wessel Family Farm southeast of Lindsay, retiring to Lindsay in 2000. Fred was in the Columbus National Guard Co. Feb. 5, 1951, to Dec. 31, 1952. He then joined the U.S. Army Jan. 21, 1953, to Jan. 25, 1954. He held the rank of corporal as a weapons instructor in 716th Military Police Battalion. serving at Camp Polk, La., and Fort Dix, N.J. He was a member of the American Legion Rotherham Post 261 of Lindsay, DAV and Catholic Order of Forester's and Holy Family Council Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Lindsay; daughters, Debbie (Kenny) Kurtenbach, of Lindsay, and Cathy (Dan) Korus, of Lindsay; grandchildren, Jeff (Kathy) Korus, of Hopedale, Ill., Joe (Tara) Korus, of Vermillion, S.D., and Angie and Amanda Korus, of Lindsay; brother, Onie (Eileen) Wessel, of Humphrey; sisters, Agatha DeCapp, of Silvis, Ill., and Eunice Olmer, of Humphrey; and sister's-in-law, Lovina Wessel, of Miline, Ill., Dorothy Wessel, of Madison, and Betty Wessel, of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son in 1989; brothers, Joseph, Tony, Urban, Myron, Frederick, Louis and Jim; and sisters, Carolyn Classen, Adeline Rezac, Gertrude Jakub and Marie Wessel.
