C. L. Starkey Of West Mt., Dies at 79 Coleman L. Starkey, 79, well-known resident of West Mountain Community, died Friday at a Gilmer convalescent home after several weeks' illness. Mr. Starkey, a lifetime resident of Upshur County, was a retired sawmill operator. He was active in the establishment of the Etex Telephone Co-operative, which brought telephone service to rural Upshur County. He was the first president of the board of directors of the co-op and had served on the board continuously since the telephone co-op was founded in 1952. At his death he held the office of vice-president of the co-op board. Mr. Starkey was born Nov. 7, 1887. He married the former Nora White at Bettie in 1909, and she preceded him in death in 1957. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Owen, Gilmer; Mrs. Myrtle May McNutt, Pittsburg; Miss Doris Starkey, Gilmer and Miss Jo Ann Starkey, Dallas; two brothers, Bill Starkey, Houston, and A. B. Starkey, Sulphur, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Eron Roach, Hooks; Mrs. Icey Moody, Gladewater, and Mrs. Agnes Bates, McKinney, 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Croley Chapel. J. R. Newman and Harvey Arnold officiated. Burial was in West Mountain Cemetery.
