Susana A. Burrows was born 11 February 1852 in Tennessee, the daughter of Anthony Burrows (b. in Tenn.) and Jane Burrows (b. in Georgia). Siblings: Josiah Burrows (1840-), Rebecca E. Burrows (1842-), Sarah G. Burrows (1844-), John W. Burrows (1846-), Samuel Burrows (1854-) and Mary J. Burrows (1857-). Sometime around 1855, her parents moved their family from Tennessee to Walker County, Georgia. It was there that she probably became acquainted with her future husband. She was married to James S. (middle name is probably Stephen) Phillips (1856-1905) on 14 February 1876 in Franklin County, Arkansas. Children: Anthony O. Phillips (1877-1883), Rutha A. [Phillips] Blythe (1878-1918), Jerry A. Phillips (1882-1895), Mary Flossie [Phillips] Blythe (1884-1935), James Phillips (1887-1888), William Eugene Phillips (1890-1946), Infant Phillips (1892-1892) and Emma M. Phillips (1894-1894). The 1900 Census records show that Susana Phillips gave birth to 9 children, 3 of which were alive at the time of the census 28 June 1900, but the 1910 Census record states that she gave birth to 8 children; Rutha A. was married to David Blythe, Mary Flossie Phillips was 16 years old at the time and her younger brother William was 10 years old. 5 children; Anthony, James, Emma, Infant and Jerry A. are all listed as deceased on the side of James S. Phillips' headstone. Between December of 1878 and 10 June 1880, James & Susana relocated to Saint Jo, Montague, Texas as evidenced by the United States 1880 Census Records. There was a J. D. Low, (Male, age 28) living with them at the time. The Unites States Census for 1900 finds them back in Arkansas living in the Barber area. Susana became a widow when her husband Jim was killed on 30 October 1905. The newspaper report went as follows. "JIM PHILLIPS KILLED" It is reported that a difficulty arose between Sam Yancy and Jim Phillips at Echo, in Logan County, near Abbott last week, during which Phillips was struck in the head with a rock and died next day. Yancy escaped to Stigler [Oklahoma] where he was arrested and brought back. The examining trial was held before Squire Hickerson of Barber, and he was bound over and taken to Booneville where he was placed in jail. Phillips was well know in this county, being a brother of Bill Phillips, who was [unreadable, but the word was probably killed or murdered] at Barber three years ago*. Phillips leaves a family but Yancy is unmarried. * Jim's brother William Thomas Phillips was actually shot and killed on 18 May 1901. Susana is found on the 1910 Census Record living with her daughter, Mary Flossie Blythe and her family. She was 65 years of age when she passed away on 25 May 1917 in Logan County, Arkansas. She was laid to rest next to her husband and babies in the Antioch Cemetery. This headstone for Susana Phillips is in the Antioch Cemetery next to James S. Phillips and with a headstone that looks like a smaller match to his but it lists her birth date as 11 Feb 1841 The 1900 Census records indicate that Susana was born Feb 1852 and her marriage certificate states that she was 24 years of age in 1876 which would verify the 1852 birth year. I believe that this is the correct headstone for the wife of James S. Phillips.
