Bio

Travis W. Hammer, 96, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at a local nursing center. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard with the Rev. Jack Bodenhamer officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco. Travis Wayne was born in Hill County, Texas. Mr. Hammer grew up on family farms in Mt. Calm and Hubbard. He later moved to Waco to work for Cameron Mills. In 1954, he went to work for Progress Laundry in Waco and stayed there until he retired in the mid-1980s. He married his wife, Mary Amerine, in 1945 in Waco, and they soon built a house in Lacy Lakeview and were still living there up to his passing. Mr. Hammer's greatest interest was his Lord, Jesus Christ. He loved to sing about Him, read about Him in the Bible, pray to Him, and talk about Him to others. He and his wife were a part of Bellevue Baptist Church and Connally Heights Baptist Church, later named Christ's Church, for their entire marriage. Mr. Hammer served in these churches in several capacities including deacon, music minister, children's Sunday School teacher, member of various committees, and so on. His faith heavily influenced his daily life and choices: he worked hard, he loved his wife tenderly, he fathered his children excellently, he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren thoroughly, and he interacted with people graciously. Though he did not have much, he was faithful to give to the Lord's work, and he prayed fervently. All who knew him well agree that he was a strong man of the Lord, who left a great example to be followed. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary; son, Clarence Hammer, of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Iris Bell and husband, Patrick, of Lacy Lakeview; granddaughter, Kristel Freitas and husband, Jeff, of Roy, Wash.; grandson, Jacob Bell and wife, Corrie, of Hewitt; five great-grandchildren, Jesse Freitas, Peter Bell, Jared Freitas, Stephen Bell, and Elisabeth Bell; sisters, Wynelle Hammer and Christine James, both of Waco; and numerous other relatives, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ. "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his godly ones." Psalm 116:15 Waco Tribune-Herald: 5/4/2011...L7
