Wilfred J. Gragert Tuesday, March 8, 2011 July 4, 1928 – March 8, 2011 Wilfred J. Gragert passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Tuesday, March 8, at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas, Texas. He was 82. Born in Richmond, Texas, into a farming family, Mr. Gragert grew up to be an avid reader, craftsman, and musician, playing the violin as well as several other instruments. His many interests included history, world events, education, and the arts. Mr. Gragert served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1949, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Accordingly, his memorial service will include military honors. After military service, Mr. Gragert earned his BSEE degree from the University of Houston. His career as an electrical engineer included 18 years at Mobil Pipeline Corporation, from which he retired. In his retirement years, he learned Spanish, traveled abroad, continued playing the violin in chamber groups, and served as an English tutor to foreign students at Richland College. An intimate graveside service will be held at Restland Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that any memorial gifts be directed to the Young Strings program, which may be reached through the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gragert is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Jean Nordt and Elenora "Mickey" Sbrusch; his son, David D. Gragert; his daughter, Amy S. Gragert; his grandson, Tristan D. Gragert; longtime friends Fred and Rosemary Achelpohl; and Patricia Vowell, former spouse and the mother of his children.
