Bio

Leonard William Gardner was born March 1, 1907 to James and Mattie Ellison Gardner. He attended school in the Rockwall community near Itasca and finished high school in Whitney. He had two brothers; Floyd Gardner and Wayne Gardner. He married Belva Williams on December 27, 1927. They had 7 children; Oneta Gardner Green, Jimmy Gardner, Gaynelle Gardner Seale, Bobby Gardner, Shirley Gardner Jennings, Tommy Gardner, June Gardner Johnston and Betty JoAnn Gardner. Leonard was a farmer and later was owner of Gardner Truck and Tractor, an International Harvester farm implement store in Itasca. Leonard served at Commissioner of Precinct 4 in Hill County for 16 years. He served as Vice President of the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas, was a former president of the Itasca Chamber of Commerce, and he served on the board of the Heart of Texas Boy Scout Council. He was prominent in civic affairs and was always ready to assist his friends, family, and his community. He died on February 2, 1977 after suffering a stroke in the Grandview bank. He had been in declining health for several years. He was a fine man, a devoted husband and father, and a wonderful grandfather to his 18 grandchildren. Leonard made his home a warm and welcoming place to visit for his family. He is greatly missed.
