Funeral Services for Loraine Hiatt, age 89 of Spencer were held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 23, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Spencer. Reverend Inez Foster officiated with burial in Highland Cemetery rural Lynch. Mrs. Hiatt died, Monday, August 20, 2007 at the Butte Healthcare Center. Loraine Josephine Milacek was born the fifth of eleven children at Bristow, Nebraska, on August 15, 1918, to Emil and Albina (Hambek) Milacek. She grew up on various farms near Bristow and Lynch. She attended schools at Lynch and Bristow. Her father taught her to play the button accordion by ear at a young age. They played together for many Bohemian dances in the area. On June 24, 1939, she married Rollin Hiatt at Tyndall, South Dakota. They made their home in Lynch until 1960 when they moved to Spencer. In 1947 she gave birth to a son, Gary Lee, who died shortly after birth. In 1950 she gave birth to son, Larry, and in 1959, son James was born. Loraine worked many jobs throughout her life. As a young girl, she worked for many families in their homes. After she was married, she worked for Bessie France and Lawrence Hoy in the grocery stores in Lynch. When they moved to Spencer, she took a job as a school cook at Spencer Schools where she worked for over 20 years, retiring in 1985. She will be remembered by many for her cooking and her amazing memory. She always knew birthdates, marriage dates and who was related to whom. She could talk for hours about the informal history of Boyd County. She enjoyed her church, gardening, canning, board games, cards and baseball. She loved to watch the Cubs on television, and when her eyesight began to fail she listened to the Twins on the radio. She lived a good life and enjoyed it to its fullest. Loraine endured many health problems all of her life without complaint. Loraine had a great love for children, often caring for many of her nieces, nephews and friends children, many of which called her Grandma. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren. She also cared for her elderly grandmother and mother for many years in her own home. In her later years, her grandchildren took care of her as much as she cared for them. The biggest disappointment in her life was the death of her precious grandson, Christopher, in 1993. Loraine was a member of the Spencer United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the American Legion Auxiliary. She lived in her house in Spencer from 1960 until moving into an apartment in 1999. In November 2006 she moved to the Butte Healthcare Center where she passed away on August 20, 2007, at the age of 89 years and five days. She leaves to mourn, her sons and their wives; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Leona Wilson of Fremont, and Mayme Marsik and Agnes Wittler, both of Omaha; two brothers, Joe Milacek and wife, Emily of Bristow and Emil Milacek, Jr. and wife, Janet of Inver Grove Heights, MN; two sisters-in-law, Ona and husband, Helmuth Holmgren of Yankton, SD, and Arlene Hargens of Spencer; countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Rollin, infant son Gary, grandson Christopher, a sister, Lois DeWitt, brothers, James and Glen and two infant siblings. Loraine was a kind and gentle spirit who will be greatly missed by her beloved grandchildren and family.
