Joseph died Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Alpine Village in Verdigre, Nebraska. Joseph "Joe" Wayne Milacek son of Emil and Albina (Hambek) Milacek, was born June 20, 1922, on a farm southwest of Bristow, NE. He passed away February 23, 2017, at the age of 94 years, eight months, and three days. Joe attended Bristow Public school and went to high school in Lynch, NE. During and after high school he worked for various farmers in the area to help support his family. He broke horses and did field work. He worked in western Nebraska before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He served during WWII. After being discharged he went to San Francisco and worked in the ship yards as an electrician. While there he was a member of the California National Guard. Later he returned to northeast NE and worked on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Joe married Emily Lewis March 6, 1948, and they lived northeast of Lynch and farmed. Later they moved to Lynch and Joe worked on the building of the Gavin's Point Dam near Yankton, SD. In 1956, Joe and Emily purchased their farm north of Bristow. Shortly after moving there, Joe was seriously injured in a farm accident in which he lost some fingers and mobility in his hands. This handicap never deterred him from working and raising his family. He and Emily raised lots of hogs, stock cows and feeder cattle. He wasn't about to give up because of his handicap and to his family he always said figure out how to do it and NEVER GIVE UP. Joe was a member of the Spencer United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post 78 of Spencer and loved working at the hamburger stand at the Boyd county fair. Joe also enjoyed bowling on league. His favorite activity was taking his wife Emily dancing. Together they attended various Czech celebrations, played cards, and went to their children's and grandchildren's events. They were always together. Joe continued to farm until 2012, then he and Emily moved to Spencer, NE. Later, they moved to Springfield Assisted Living Center and finally to Alpine Village in Verdigre, NE. Thankful for having shared his life are his wife of almost 69 years, Emily of Verdigre; his children Shirley of Denver, CO, Leslie and wife Judy of San Diego, CA, Alice and husband Lowell Vanderlei of Springfield, SD, and Phyllis and husband Al Carter of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren Jamie, Jody, Michael, Lisa and Clarence; three great-grandchildren, Sammi, Josie, and Elowen; one brother, Emil and wife Jan of MN; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Candice Jo; grandchildren, Joshua and Deborah; seven brothers and sisters, Leona, Mamie, Loraine, Glen, Agnes, James, and Lois.
