Bio

Glasco Sun, Oct. 17, 1902, page 4: It is with sadness that we record the death of Mrs. Rilla Mathews, which occurred on the 3rd day of Oct., 1902, in the city of Glasco, Kansas. Deceased was born in Livingston Co., Illinois, on the 14th of Oct., 1858 and was in her 44th year when she passed away. With her parents she removed to Glasco in Oct., 1877, and has resided here and on the farm east of town, ever since, until her death. On Feb. 15th, 1886, she was united in marriage to Mr. William Mathews, who survives her, with the two children, Miss Lena and Earle, to mourn the departure of the beloved wife and mother. Mrs. Mathews was a daughter of Mr. Robert C. Pilcher and Mrs. Ara A. Pilcher, who have both gone to the heavenly home some years ago. A brother and sister also passed over Death's river before the dread messenger came to the home of our departed sister. One sister, Mrs. Mary F. Gray, and to whom she was so tenderly attached, four brothers: William, James F., Robert B., and Charles H. Pilcher, yet remain to share with each other in this their sore trial and bereavement. Thus a good and faithful wife and mother, and sister and friend has gone out for the last time from the earthly home, and from the presence of the many surviving relatives and friends, to live with God in his presence, and in our tenderest memory. She has suffered in body for over a year, but grew weaker with the going of the days. Medical skill could not stay the disease that took her away, and loving wishes and prayers for her recovery could not avail to have her spirit remain in our midst. .......... She gave minute directions concerning her funeral which were faithfully carried out. Her mind was clear to the end. The remains were laid to rest in Glasco Cemetery on the 5th last. Rev. Seamans of Delphos, a former pastor of hers, preached the funeral sermon ....... Resolutions honoring her death were published on the same page from two organizations: Snow Flower Camp, 149, Royal Neighbors of America; signed by Della Prince, Mattie Jamison, C.G. Archer Modern Woodmen of America, Glasco Camp No. 1590; signed by W.A. Hillhouse, Owen Day, J.E. Willars
