The Monon News, Thursday, December 11, 1952, page 1 JOSEPH NEWGENT EXPIRES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS Body Returned Here for Services and Burial Joseph S. Newgent, 81, well known Monon resident, passed away at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon of last week at the Plymouth, Ind. home of his daughter, Mrs. Mark Seward. Mr. Newgent had been in failing health for some time and bedfast for the past four years, suffering from a broken hip. Born Mar. 20, 1871, at Greencastle, the son of Isaac and Sephronia Newgent, he had worked at the Monon Crushed Stone Company and twenty years for the Monon Route, retiring in 1935. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Monticello. Surviving are four sons, James of North Liberty and Wilbur, Charles, and Gene of South Bend, and five daughters, Mrs. Kay Kontos of Chicago, Mrs. Eva Seward of South Bend, Mrs. Nellie Long of Monon, Mrs. Esther Seward of Plymouth, and Mrs. Margaret Swing of Monon. Also surviving is a daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Mable Yates of Gary. Services were held at the Nickler Funeral home Saturday afternoon with the Rev. L. W. Orr of the Baptist church officiating. Burial was in the Bedford Cemetery.
