Johns parents were Henry and Sarah King. He is in the 1860 census living in Blue River, Harrison, Indiana. In 1870 he is with his siblings in Jackson, Douglas Co, Missouri. He was a farmer, but it appears he always rented and never owned a farm. John was said to be a man of few words. His grandson told the story of how John road for 16 hours in a wagon with his son-in-law and the only thing he added to the conversation was when the son-in-law said "It sure is hot" John said "Yep".
