Mary was the daughter of Alfred Monroe Smith and Helena Murff. She married her first cousin, James Randolph Murff, 22 September 1869. Their children were Charles Grandville Murff, Needham Lucian Murff, Guy Eugene Murff, Margaret Hennrietta Howard, Henry Clay Murff, Mary Florence Davis, and Virginia "Vergie" Elizabeth McDonald.
