Lair, 78 years, 6 months and 12 days old, died very suddenly early this Saturday morning at the home of a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shelton in Anna. He was ill only a few minutes when his death suddenly occurred. / The funeral will be conducted at 3 o'clock tomorrow, Sunday afternoon, April 28, in the Baptist Church at Anna, in which church he had been an officer and leading member for many years. Services will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. Mr. Bonner, assisted by his former pastor, Rev. G. O. Key of McKinney. Interment will follow in the Lair Cemetery one and a half miles west of Anna, which burying ground was donated by his father, the late Dr. W. Lair, pioneer North Collin settler, physician and former state senator from the district in which Collin was then a part. The Sam J. Massie & Son Funeral Home of McKinney is directing the funeral arrangements. NATIVE OF KENTUCKY : The following biographical sketch prepared by our Melissa correspondent, Mrs. Ethel Parris Anderson, appeared in this paper only the other day (April 16, 1929 issue) which we herewith reproduce : / William Plutarch Lair, one of North Collin's best known, retired, old farmers was born Oct. 15, 1860 in Russell County, Kentucky. He is therefore approaching his 79th year. He was one of the several sons of the late Dr. William D. Lair, pioneer North Collin physician who brought his family to Texas in 1857 and settled on his old home farm one and one-fourth miles west of Anna. The farm is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Powell, the latter being a granddaughter of Dr. Lair. / W. P. Lair was only 7 years old when his father settled in North Collin and has therefore been living in this county for about 72 years. He had two brothers, John B. of Anna and L. C. (Curg) of Canyon, Texas, both now deceased. He also had two half brothers, now deceased. They were T. C. Lair of Emory but formerly of McKinney {remainder missing}. He also had two sisters, Mrs. O. Slaughter, still living near Anna and the late Mrs. Delia Nipp, first wife of the late George Nipp of Anna. She passed away many years ago. / Mr. Lair was united in marriage to Miss Mary Clay Portman 55 years ago. The date of the marriage was January 11, 1872. They began housekeeping on the farm that he still owns and where he has continuously lived until since Christmas when they moved to Anna to make their home with their only daughter, Mrs. Tom Shelton and family. They deemed this necessary on account of the impaired health of Mrs. Lair. Mr. and Mrs. Lair have one son, Bryan B. Lair, now living in Dallas. Mrs. W. P. Lair was a daughter of the late Uncle Billy and Aunt Martha Ellen Portman. She was born in Russell County, Kentucky, Jan. 20, 1853 and her parents brought her to Texas when she was 10 months old. She had several sisters, Miss Cora Bett who died when a young lady ; Mrs. Alice Gladden, now deceased, who was the first wife of J. B. Gladden of Celina ; Mrs. Sallie (Jesse) Slaughter of the White Rock Community and Mrs. Florence Nipp of Anna. / Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Lair are faithful members of the Anna Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife and one son and one daughter as follows : Mrs. R. T. Shelton of Anna and Bryan Lair of 1827 ? St., Dallas and one sister survives, Mrs. O. Slaughter near Anna."
